This page will detail / document safety and rescue related topics..
There are a number of options to get some properly organised and certified rescue training. The simplest options are to do the 1 day RSR1 and / or the 2 day RSR2 which are ICU Courses. Alternatively if you want a more in depth course that is worldwide recognised, as well as being a pre-requisite for becoming a raft guide then you should consider doing a Swift Water Rescue Technician Course (SRT)…(more details to follow)….
For a good introduction to some vital safety and rescue skills the RSR series of courses are a good start. The choice is between the 1 day RSR 1 and the 2 day RSR 2 course, with the RSR 1 being more of an introductory course looking at some key concepts, such as self rescue, low risk to high risk ideas and rescue orders starting with yourself first. RSR 2 builds on the RSR 1 course.
RSR 1 and RSR 2 Courses will be offered through I-Canoe

An update for this page…in relation to rescue and white water safety it is accepted that ‘you’ are the most important person and ‘you’ need to develop the skills and mindset to help rescue yourself first…obvioulsy whilst you are still in your kayak rolling is the key, but anyone who boats harder water etc is at some stage going to have to pull the eject switch and enter the water…this is where the imperative is looking after yourself first and foremost, and this is where good swimming skills come in. It is one thing to swim in a realtively narrow and rocky river commonly found in Ireland but when you progress abroad and are running longer, more continous, more remote and bigger volume rivers no throw bag will help and it is going to be really hard for someone in a kayak to pull you to shore. In reality throw bags and large rivers don’t work well together and in any case when reading and running there is going to be no pre throw bag set up. Anyway back to the main point: the development of good self preservation swimming skills is vital, and this can only be done with practice…SO GET OUT THERE INTO THE RIVER AND SWIM SOME RAPIDS! As an illustration check this video out, which was made by Dave Hoffman from Portlandd, Oregon after a personal experience on the ESSF of the Salmon River, Idaho.

This is one of the key elements of the SRT courses, which place great emphasis on this key skill…
