Grand Canyon

4 Dec 09

GC Jan 09 ref James 2 232 As we have a cople of extra days this year I am planning to have at least one lay over (possibly 2 depending on time) to have a relaxing day and a chance for some good hiking / exploring…I am thinking of somewhere like Nankoweap / Tanner / Lava Chuar Canyon / Basalt Canyon (Ochoa Point) for the first stop; although these areas are only aroind 50 – 70 river miles from Lee’s Ferry. Another spot further downstream, around RM 133 above Tapeats Creek (camping at Racetrack) for some cool hiking / exploration up Tapeats to Thunder River Spring…In all cases layover camps are going to be good for winter sun!!!.,,and the amount possible depends on time etc….I will keep you informed…

For those who are interested and want to look into things check out the trip report from last year (posted 21st January 2009; An Amazing Trip Down the Grand Canyon) but FYI we camped at the following spots (we got good info on spots for winter sun and / or driftwood for the old camp fire!!):

  • Soap Creek, RM 11.2
  • Nautiloid Camp, RM 35
  • Carbon Canyon, RM 65
  • Cremation Camp, Rm 87
  • 110 Mile Camp, RM 110.5
  • Below Fossil, Rm 126
  • Lower Ledges, RM 152
  • Fern Glen Camp, RM 168
  • Whitmore Camp, Rm 188
  • 202 Mile Camp, RM 202
  • 220 Mile Upper Camp, Rm 220

We have all the necesary river guide map books with notes from last year, hiking books etc etc..

Getting excited again…bring it on!!

GC Jan 09 ref James 2 065Yowser and yippee…December is here meaning that Christmas is shortly upon us, followed a few short days later by our Grand Canyon River Exped take 2…what a way to welcome in the new year of 2010!!GC Jan 09 ref James 2 013

Time seems to be flying along now and there is still plenty to be done and arranged so it’s time for an update here…

We have now paid over $4000 for the trip; a permit fee of $100 / person for 12 and $3000 to the Outfitters….if you have not paid anything or paid very little please try and send some money to me so I can pay off some more, or be aware that your share will be that much greater when we get to Flagstaff…thanks to the same people who have paid up when asked…the total cost, inlcuding permit fee, outfitting fees, tranport/shuttle costs from PHX-Flagstaff-GC Jan 09 ref James 2 027PHX, from Flagstaff to the Canyon to Flagstaff, accommodation in Flagstaff for the few days and all food whilst on the Canyon is looking like it is going to come in at around €650 each (plus flights)-so try to budget that into your costings. You will obvioulsy need a little more for food for a few dayGC Jan 09 ref James 2 029s in Flagstaff and any extras you want to spend before we head into the Canyon…

Anyway turning to the main reasons for this post:

  1. 1. Menu and food cook crew rotas

Some important info for everyone…and check out last year’s blog…jammersworld.net…

Trip Launch: January 2nd at Lees Ferry

Trip take out: January 15th at Diamond Creek

So we head up to Lees Ferry on New Year’s Day and head back to Flagstaff on January 15th before flying home from Phoenix on Janaury 16th (in time to be bleary eyed for work on Monday January 17th…bummer!)

A few important points:

  • everyone needs a USCG approved B. Aid. In addition we need 2 spares for regulations
  • everyone needs their paddle, plus we need 2 spares again
  • we need 1 extra minor first aid kit…we have 2 major and 1 minor hired with the rafts etc..
  • camping gear, such as tents, sleeping bags, down jackets, raingear, off river wear, degradable shampoo etc-bring your own good stuff if you have and try to liaise with everyone else so we don’t all bring a tent each etc…
  • There is an orientation video with the permit pack we all are supposed to watch…we will try to organise this at some stage but if you do not get to see it don’t worry it is mostly common sense…again there is a link up on previous posts on my blog..however we need to tell the Park Ranger we have all seen it!

image image

  1. We have one spare USCG B. Aid and can hire one from Moenkopi. We can also get 2 from people last year…if you need us to try and get one for you let us know…thanks.
  2. I have one set of splits and will organise bringing another full spare paddle….so that is covered.
  3. We need someone to volunteer to sort out sourcing and bringing an extra minor first aid kit please….please let me know if you can be the one…For a lost of what is expected in a minor first kit refer to my blog (jammersworld.net) and search for grand canyon posts covering this last year
  4. We will be organising foodstuffs from the Outfitter soon but people will be put into cook crews (as last year) with the cook crews being responsible for cooking and cleaning up after for a that meal…
  5. image image

Here are the cook crews and their meal allocations:

  • Cook Crew 1: James, Fran, Colette, Francis
  • Cook Crew 2: Steven, Declan, Sean
  • Cook Crew 3: Maeve, Mags, Aisling

We will confirm the menu soon

Grand Canyon Take 2 is fast approaching…yowser!!

Sorry for the lack of info and input on the blog re the upcoming trip but for those who are returning and for those who are coming for the first time..bring it on!!

Anyway there’s load of info to refresh the memory or help out first timers-just check old posts by using the category or archive menus to the side —–>

Flights are booked for lots of us to arrive into Flagstaff Decmeber 29th…like last year we will organise a shuttle up to Flagstaff either that night or the 30th. We will be staying in Brady’s place until the 1st January when we will get shuttled up to Lees Ferry for the fisrt camp and the Ranger meet on the 2nd January before heading off…this time we get 2 extra days on the river meaningou know we are planning a layover for one day and we get off on the 15th, back to Flagstaff for the night and then (boo) back home on the 16th…

When we have sorted out sending in the permit pack and everyone is confirmed we will arrange meal schedules etc similar to last year and post up here….

Remember the USCG approved B. Aid’s…if you can borrow one then cool…maybe off any friends who may have one..if not the other options are to buy one and get it sent to the Outfitter like we did last year or hiring a flowery one off the Outfitter, also like last year!!Anyway let us know….

Any questions either post up here in reply or email or facebook works….
